2013.0059 PRODUCTION AND PROMOTIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS [1968-2005] Creator(s): La Mama Theatre [1967-] This series consists of photographs taken at La Mama Theatre for publicity and promotional purposes. They document specific productions staged at La Mama, as well as the theatre itself and related individuals. The majority of photographs in this series document productions staged at La Mama. Each production budget allocated funds for photography for the purpose of promotion. Resulting photographs were provided to newspapers to accompany published reviews and interviews. Coverage of productions from the 1970’s is somewhat scant, due in part to photographs not being returned by newspapers. In the mid 1980’s La Mama employed a permanent publicist. As a result coverage of productions from these years onward is much more comprehensive. A small portion of photographs document the theatre itself and related events, such as workshops and exhibition openings. A wide range of photographers are represented in the photographs. Production companies chose the photographer they wished to work with. As a result, style and composition vary dramatically throughout the series. In 2013, La Mama began a project to catalogue and digitise the photographs in a project run by Fiona Wiseman with volunteers assisting. This project formed the basis of the catalogue data used in this series. 22 albums; 1 box (1.39m) Culture and the Arts, organisations
