2014.0096 [FACULTY OF MUSIC CORRESPONDENCE FILES]
Date Range of Records: 1974-1980
Creator(s):
- University Of Melbourne. Faculty Of Music [-]
The majority of the files in this series focus on music education and teaching methods, including the ground-breaking experimental teaching program favoured by Max Cooke who was Dean of the Faculty of Music from 1975 until 1981. Professor Cooke went on to release a number of publications about working with musically gifted children and the genesis of his work can be seen in this series. At the time Cooke was Dean there was a great deal of debate within and outside Melbourne University regarding academic education for musicians versus practical debate. Despite the Victorian College of the Arts having opened in 1974, Cooke continued to champion the Faculty's role in practical music. The records in this series largely comprise: Composers in Residence files; Course development; Events (Music Week, Lunch Hour Concerts etc.); Experimental Teaching Project (personnel files, questionnaires, reports, correspondence and the various programs in schools, piano groups, brass groups, violin performance etc.); Gifted Children (articles, submissions, letters, information, drafts, teaching material etc.); Student Exchange; Teacher Training and; Visits (by composers and performers)
