The correspondence files in the Faculty of Dental Science are divided into 12 sections as discussed below. 1. Accommodation, Equipment and Services: the files cover the accommodation requirements for the Faculty of Dental Science, i.e. lecture theatres etc. Each department has stated their equipment priorities. There are references to audio-visual aids, an electron microscope, irridating equipment, as well as to safety spectacles, a franking machine and laboratory equipment. Services include the cafeteria, car-parking and careers services. 2. Courses: there are references to the course structure, details of subjects, course changes, contact hours and the final honours degree scoring system. Postgraduate / continuing education courses are also documented and additionally, there is some Summer School material; 3. Departments: There are references to the departments of Dental Prosthetics, Dental Medicine and Surgery and Conservative Dentistry; 4. Budgets and Finance: There are references to accounts and budgets, financial statements, the Contingency Fund, as well as to the Departmental Vote, Hospital Grants and the Equipment Grant; 5. Administrative Procedure and Policy Matters: There is a wide range of correspondence from the Vice-Chancellor and his assistant, the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Science, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), as well as from the Registrar, the Deputy Registrar and the Vice Principal. This correspondence covers student numbers and selection, Professorial Chairs, budgets, equipment, dental expansion and the conferring of degrees, amongst other matters; 6. Conferences and Visitors: The files cover the Grand Clinics, the Guest Lecture Series, as well as congresses; 7. Staff: Staff matters cover honorary staff, clinical supervisors, the appointment to staff and the Staff Association. There are also references to staff forms, the Dental Alumni Research Foundation, research and teaching. Other matters include staff costs, fixed-term positions, promotion, early retirement and the staff superannuation scheme. 8. Publications: These cover the Faculty Handbook, the Gazette, "Mouth Mirror" and "Mouth Organ" (student publications) and Staff News. There are also references to publications by the faculty's academic staff; 9. Legislation: The files cover correspondence from the University Solicitor and the Assistant University Solicitor. There are references to the amendments of statutes and the agreement between the Royal Dental Hospital and the University of Melbourne. 10. Student Matters: Information given: the photographing of students, overseas students, scholarships, prizes and bequests. There are also references to first enquiries re courses, examinations, ad eundum statum admissions, student representatives on faculties, as well as to student dress, examinations, the Melbourne Dental Students' Society and clinical experience periods. Other subjects covered: graduate studies, supervision, student contact hours, handicapped students and graduation. There is a large body of information on selection; 11. Other Sections of the University and Other Institutions: The Faculty of Dental Science conducts business with many branches of Central Administration and other academic departments. Outside bodies which have contact with the Faculty of Dental Science include interstate and overseas Universities, VISE, VUAC and VUSEB as well as the Australian Universities Commission, the Australian Vice Chancellor's Committee and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. A number of Dental Institutions are also listed: the Australian Dental Association, the Australian Society of Periodontology, the General Dental Council of Great Britain, the International Association for Dental Research and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons; 12. Expansion: The material on expansion consists of the Planning Instructions for the Hospital Architects, planning drafts and multiple copies of the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne - Master Plan Reports by Eggleston, Macdonald and Secomb.
