2014.0083 FILES RELATING TO THE ORGANISATION OF THE CHANCELLOR'S PARTIES [1967-1981] Creator(s): University Of Melbourne. Office Of The Chancellor [1853-] Organisation of the Chancellor's parties was undertaken by Sir David Derham's Secretary. The files contain lists of people invited to the Chancellor's parties. Multiple lists often exist for any one year, often being annotated to indicate acceptance or refusal of the invitation. The early files (1967-1972) include a clean or master, aggregated listing with the date, time and venue of the function, and summary lists of those invited annotated as "A = accept" or "R = regret". Working papers must have also been maintained at some stage, but these are not present in these files. The later files (1973 and onwards) of the series include a copy of the invitation distributed, lists of guests, letters of acceptance and letters of apology (i.e. working papers, drafts, notes etc. are present and hence, these files are far thicker). The venue was generally in Wilson Hall, but sometimes, at the Chancellor's home. Those invited generally included a distinguished visitor (e.g. someone like the Governor of Victoria), Council, Professors, Associate Professors, Readers, Heads of Department, Heads of Colleges and Halls of Residence, Administration Staff, University Chaplains, Warden of Convocation, Chairman of Union Board and representatives from other Universities, government, business, hospitals, Melbourne University clubs and societies etc. 2 boxes (0.24m) University, official
