Arranged by his Executor, prior to their deposit, the records comprise of research papers, discussion papers, meeting minutes, reports, drafts and interim reports; including reports to government departments, organisational reports (some relating to the Brotherhood of St Laurence, St Anthony's Project, and St Vincent’s and St Augustine’s Boys’ Homes), published and annual reports. The papers also include supporting material such as literature reviews and bibliographic reference lists, working papers and draft notes, handwritten and typed notes, course frameworks objectives and reviews, copies of journal articles, books, statistics and information booklets or pamphlets, correspondence and newspaper clippings. His personal papers also include a file (1968-1973) relating to his dissertation, which includes correspondence between Tierney and Professor Kahn at the Columbia University School of Social Work. It does not contain his dissertation. In addition there are three boxes of records created by Tierney’s colleague Ruth Hoban. These items may have been donated by Hoban as a contribution to Tierney’s research on William Forster and the Try Boys Society, as they include early 1900s ‘Annual Report of the Committee of the City Newsboys’ Society’, photographs of Forster’s family members, and early grave sites, the Forster Saddlery [sic] in Rothbury, and 1970s slides relating to or of Burnside Croft, Culgower, Sutherland Scotland. They also include correspondence, newspaper clippings (1970s), and photocopies of United Kingdom and Victorian Commercial, Professional and Trade Directories, Birth Entries, Death Certificates, Council Papers and Citizen Rolls from the 1800s.
