Born in Sunbury, Victoria in 1902, Johnston was educated at Melbourne High School and Melbourne University, graduating B.A., B. Com in 1923. He was appointed University Accountant in 1928 and Registrar in 1947. He served in this position until he retired. He died in 1978. Deed of Gift, the Melbourne Hospital to the University of Melbourne of 'Pathological specimens subject to Conditions'. The deed, which was drawn up by Smith & Emmerton, is dated 1882, but was signed and sealed by the University by order of a Council meeting of 3 December 1883.
