2013.0122 [Administration records of the Citizens Welfare Service Of Victoria]
Date Range of Records: 1946-1987
Creator(s):
- Citizens Welfare Service Of Victoria [1946-1996]
- Social Policy Archive [1993-1997]
This series is a composite of various administrative records taken into the RMIT Social Policy Archive from the Citizen Welfare Service of Victoria and previously arranged into separate series. During processing into UMA the series were combined into a single grouping based on their lack of other suitable arrangement and that they documented the administration of the CWS as opposed to its strictly client focussed activities. The records include (1) a history of the CWS, previous reference numbers 54/743. (2) A number of subject files apparently isolated from any other related series. All items in this series were originally wrapped in brown paper in bundles. Topics covered in this series range from The Kew Girls Hostel, North Melbourne Social Service, West Gate Bridge collapse to papers relating to the social workers wage rates and production of an infertility handbook. Previous reference numbers 78/1612-1619. (3) Official copies of balance sheets and accounts, certified by Young & Outhwaite, Chartered Accountants. This series is incomplete, with gaps prior to 1962, and 1965, 1967-1968 are also missing. Previous reference numbers 80/1621-1635. (4) As a public benevolent institution, the CWS of Victoria was required to provide financial returns/statements to the Hospitals and Charities Commission. These records consist of financial returns completed by CWS, showing a summary of expenses and income, balance sheet and accounts and provided to the Hospitals and Charities Commission. '1955/6' is written incorrectly on the reverse of the first sheet and two additional files containing these returns. Previous reference numbers 81/1636; 81/1688-1689. (5) Board of Management meeting minutes including sub-committee meetings. These files were transferred to the RMIT Social Policy Archive as a second accession in December 1993 and seem to have been kept as a separate series. Previous reference numbers 96/2164-2169. (6) A single file containing the minutes of meetings concerning co-ordinated response to the collapse of the Westgate Bridge disaster. Committee membership included Elizabeth Sharpe, Executive Director, CWS, representatives from Trades Hall, John Holland Construction Group (builder), the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society, Commonwealth Department of Social Services. Includes a list of names of children involved in the disaster 15 Oct 1970, and names and addresses of next of kin of those who lost their lives. There is also a report on the impact of work with Westgate families on the social workers and on the CWS as a whole. Previous reference number 97/2170. NOTE: one box from the RMIT Social Policy Archive that belongs to this series is box 328, containing items 96/2164-2167 is recorded as not having been received from RMIT when the records were transferred.
