The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust was announced by the Prime Minister on 23 May, 1978, one year after Sir Robert's death. In his media release, Malcolm Fraser explained that the trust was a means of commemorating the legacy of Menzies to the nation. The trust was intended to relate to the law, with particular reference to constitutional matters and Federal/ State relationships; studies concerned with Australia's role within the British Commonwealth and with Australia/ Britain relations; studies of Australia and the United States; studies of relations between Australia and the Pacific Nations.; and to bring to Australia, for public meetings or special consultations, speakers of distinction or young persons of promise and interest. An appeal was launched to fund the foundation. The fund was under the authority of a National Committee with a series of State Committees. Sir David was a founding member of the National Committee and also made a press statement on the life of Sir Robert at the launch of the Victorian appeal. Sir David's committee papers include the various proposals suggested for the form of the foundation and a draft for his concept of a Law Institute is included.
