The Greer Archive has been made available because of its historical and research importance. Statements which form part of the collection are not made on behalf of the University and do not represent the University's views. It contains material that some researchers might find confronting. This includes: explicit language and images that reflect either the attitudes of the era in which the material was originally published or the views of the creators of the material but may not be considered appropriate today; names, images and voices of deceased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in published and unpublished printed material, audio recordings and photographs; discussion and descriptions of sexual violence, medical conditions and treatment.
This series consists of recordings of film and television programs to which Germaine Greer has contributed, either as an actor, presenter, guest, interviewer or interviewee. It should be noted that it is distinct from the Television series (2017.0002), which contains the hard copy documentation relating to these appearances. Relationships between records in this series and the Television series have been noted where possible.
The television programs and films represented here encompass a wide range of formats and subjects. These include review programs, documentaries, quiz and game shows, sitcoms, reality television, chat shows and recordings of lectures and speaking engagements. The degree to which Greer contributes to each program varies considerably. Many documentary programs use small snippets of interviews on a given subject, for example on the work of Marc Quinn on Lily Cole's Art Matters (2012). Others focus primarily on Greer’s work and life, such as Germaine Greer Revisited (1987) and Close to the Bone (1999).
The series was compiled by Greer over many years and contains primarily VHS cassettes and DVDs. The earliest record in the series is a 16mm reel of footage from 1969 of an outtake from the sketch comedy series Nice Time, depicting Kenney Everett as a milkman and Germaine Greer as a housewife taking a bath in milk. The earliest VHS cassettes date from 1985, which may have been when Greer started to make a concerted effort to document her screen appearances. In 2012 Greer employed an audio-visual archivist to locate and acquire copies of programs not represented in the archive. Melissa Osbourne’s working inventory of recordings can be found as part of the Control Records series (2018.0054). Recordings of programs broadcast before 1985 are collected here as a result of this project and were generally received by Greer on DVD.
Recordings have originated from a number of different sources. Many VHS cassettes appear to have been recorded by Greer from the original broadcast. In several instances, multiple programs have been recorded back to back on a single cassette. Many contain preceding or following unrelated programs which have not been indexed in UMA’s listing of the series. Others have been received from the production companies themselves, occasionally with slight variations from the program as broadcast.
While most recordings in the series consist of programs as broadcast, there are several notable instances of unique material. There are 5 cassettes of raw footage of flora and fauna shot for Greer’s contribution to the Dutch series Van de Schoonheid en de Troost (Of Beauty and Consolation) (2000), as well as 3 different cuts of the final program. Other examples include a rough reconnaissance tape of Greer visiting architectural sites in Warwick in preparation for filming of Travels with Pevsner (1997), and five cassettes of different cuts and associated footage for the program Bad Ideas of the Twentieth Century, 'Youthism'.
The majority of recordings in this series were digitised or migrated from optical media in 2017. A small number of recordings were not migrated either due to being commercially available or freely available online. |
