Wallace-Crabbe, Emeritus Professor Christopher Keith
Biography: Chris Wallace-Crabbe was born in Richmond, Victoria on 6 May 1934. He was educated at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne, graduating B.A. in 1956 and M.A. 1964. He worked in various jobs in the city before becoming the Lockie Fellow in Australian Literature, University of Melbourne, 1961-1963. Subsequent appointments within the Department of English led to a Readership in 1977, and Chairmanship of the Department 1974- 1976 and 1984-5. His career as an academic and as a poet has led to a number of distinguished fellowships and appointments: Harkness Fellow at Yale University 1965-67; visiting fellow at the University of Exeter 1973; visiting Professor at the University of Venice, Ca Foscari, 1973; elected Fellow of Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1984; Harvard University Chair of Visiting Professor of Australian Studies 1987-88; Grace Leven Prize for poetry 1986; Dublin Prize for the Arts and Sciences 1987, and so on. He was the Director of the Australian Centre, University of Melbourne 1989-1994 and Emeritus Professor at the Centre from 1998. Along with works of fiction, literary criticism and edited volumes, he has published sixteen volumes of poetry to 2001. In 2011 recieved an Order of Australia medal for service to the arts as a leading poet, critic and educator.
