The predecessor of this Committee, the Adhoc Committee on Marine Sciences, is first documented meeting in December 1974. Early meetings focused on the establishment of the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences and the need for a Faculty response to an offer of participation in the design of a research vessel under development with the CSIRO. Further meetings focused on curriculum developments, establishment of academic standards and budget allocations. As the work of the Committee became broader throughout 1975, it began to focus on the establishment of a Standing Committee on Marine Sciences, to have the status of a sub-committee of the Faculty Executive Committee. The Committee on Marine Sciences commenced at the beginning of 1976, superceding the work of the Adhoc Committee. The first meeting was conducted on 29th January 1976, with Mr. Marc Marsden in the Chair. |
