University Of Melbourne. Faculty Of Science
History : Previous Control Number UA20 The Faculty of Science held its first meeting on 11th December 1903, having been instituted by Council through amendments to statute IV between July and September of that year. The first Dean of Science, elected at this meeting, was Professor Laurie. Under the original statute, the faculty was constituted by the Professors, independent lecturers in the science school, and such other members as appointed by council from time to time. All proceedings were to be recorded and the faculty was required to report to the Council and Professorial/Academic Board on any matters requested of it. The Dean was to be elected by the members of the Faculty and to hold office for one year. The faculty was to consider all questions relating to the educational and administrative business of the Faculty including: Academic Staffing; Course Approvals; Requests for Information about the Faculty; Special admission applications including ad eundem statum and ad eundem gradum. In recent years the administration of the Faculty has been shared by the Dean and the General Manager (previously known as the Sub-Dean or Assistant Registrar). Initially the disciplines taught within the Faculty included Chemistry, Physiology, Biology (including elementary Botany), Geology and Minerology, as well as subjects from the Schools of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy (Physics). As of 2014, the faculty comprises of four schools and four departments - Botany, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, Genetics, Mathematics & Statistics, Optometry & Vision Sciences, and Zoology, and it has an active involvement in a number of competitively funded research centres.
