History : |
The Visiting Scholars Fund was formed by the Faculty Budgets Committee to provide funding assistance for adacemics from other nations and institutions to conduct teaching for Departments in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. Funding was provided for an initial trial period of three years, and the first meeting of the Committee was held on 18th January 1974. The function of the Visiting Scholars Committee was to approve dispersements from the fund upon requests made by Departments. This included bringing in academics to fill temporary vacancies created by staff leave, and attracting touring lecturers for one-off seminars. Departments which made nominations for funding or visiting scholars were expected to organise their itinary and provide suitable accommodation. The final meeting was conducted on 16th October 1977, at which time it was resolved to report to the Faculty Budgets Committee that the fund had been a success and to recommend its continuance. There is, however, no evidence of continued funding after 1977. |
