Psychology was a subject in the Philosophy course from 1888, in turn as part of the subject Mental Philosophy, Deductive Logic and Elementary Psychology, and Psychology, Logic and Ethics. A course in Experimental Psychology was also given in the Arts and Education course in 1918-19 by Dr. A.B. Fitt, employed at the Training College, where J. McRae also taught General Method and Psychology. Fitt failed to have his subject put on a regular University footing. In August 1925 the Professorial Board discussed reports by W.R. Gibson and J.A. Gunn on the need for development of teaching in Psychology and the establishment of a Department of Social Science respectively, giving its support to the establishment of a Chair of Psychology. This proposal was the subject of a report by a committee of the Board early in 1926. The development of Psychology was again under discussion in 1933-1935, when the Faculty of Medicine was instituting a course in Psychological Medicine. In 1943 a second Board committee recommended the establishment of a Chair and Department of Psychology. O.A.Oeser was appointed Professor in 1945 and arrived in Melbourne in September 1946 to take up the Chair. |
