Geology, taught from the University's commencement when it was comprehended in the Natural Science taught by Professor Frederick McCoy, After McCoy's death in 1899 John William Gregory was appointed to the first Chair of Geology and Mineralogy, to be followed on his resignation in 1904 by Ernest Skeats (1905-1941), Herbert St. John Summers (1941-1944) who returned as coordinator of buildings (check) Sherbon Hills from 1944 until appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 1962. In June 1944 Hills sought to have moved out of its quarters in the Geology School the Mineragraphic Branch of C.S.I.R. to a new structure behind the building now known as "Old Geology" which the University would own and his own Department would share, C.S.I.R. paying rent for its portion. Having obtained finance, the building, designed by John Scarborough, was built during 1947-1948 and occupied in 1949. The post-war influx of students also necessitated the acquisition of apparatus, some of which was obtained through the Universities' Commission. |
