The University Conservatorium Old Students' Association was initiated at a preliminary meeting on 27 May 1921 at which a possible constitution was considered. Its aims were to 'foster the bounds of friendship between former members of the Conservatorium, to promote social intercourse and exchange views and provide lectures, discussions etcetera in relation to our Art'. Graduates and some students of the Conservatorium were eligible for membership. The inaugural General Meeting was held at a musical evening at Melba Hall on the 30th September 1921, and the inaugural meeting of the Committee was held on 29th June 1921. One of the significant campaigns of the Association was Music in Schools, upon which a sub-committee worked during 1936. This committee organised a survey of Victorian public and convent schools to ascertain their commitment to teaching music, and liaised with the State Government's Education Department over teacher training in music and curriculum. The Association was disbanded in June 1973 due to declining interest and membership. |
