The Trade Union Migrant Workers' Centre was established in 1976 by a small group of unions, as a result of a proposal during the second Migrant Workers Conference in 1975. The Centre's primary aim was to strengthen the links between non English speaking workers and their unions. Membership of the TUMWC was open to any Victorian union affiliated with the Victorian Trades Hall Council. It was funded by unions who recognised and understood the needs and problems of migrant workers and obtained various state and federal government funding during its existence. The Centre's role included assisting injured workers with Workers' Compensation matters, translation and interpreting, case work and counselling. By the late 1980s the Centre had lost a component of its government funding and affiliation fees from trade unions were insufficient to maintain its previous staffing levels and programmes. Despite attempts to provide a more secure financial base, the TUMWC closed on 23 July 1991, having insufficient funds to continue. |
