History : A biscuit manufacturing company prominent in the history of Victorian manufacturing since its foundation by Thomas Swallow in 1858. In 1859 Thomas Harris Ariell joined the firm. (Ariell died 8 Jul 1875.) FT Derham (later M.L.A. & P.M.G.) son-in-law of Swallow joined the firm in 1879 and became managing director, a position held by several generations of Derhams. F.T. Derham was elected to the Legislative Assembly as member for Sandridge (Port Melbourne) in February 1883. On 20 February 1886 he became Postmaster General in the Gillies-Deakin Government, and held the portfolio until his resignation in August 1890. He remained a member of the Assembly until April 1892. By 1880 the business was producing 150 different lines of biscuits. Later they opened a cake manufactury with particular attention to wedding cakes. To protect the business they acquired a Queensland sugar plantation later acquired by CSR. Swallow and Ariell was acquired by the Arnott-Brockhoff-Guest biscuit group in 1964 and the company de-listed on 5 Aug 1964 after the Australian Biscuit Company acquired more than 95% of its issued capital.
