Stephenson & Turner
History : Sir Arthur George Stephenson, born in 1890 in Box Hill, practised from his Melbourne office from 1920 until 1967. After serving in the A.I.F. and working as an architect in London he was the founding member in 1920 of the firm Stephenson & Meldrum, which became Stephenson & Turner in 1938. Early commissions included Collins Court, State Savings Bank branches, the Stock Exchange Building, the Melbourne Town Hall, the M.C.G. Members' Stand and parts of major Victorian hospitals. By the 1980's the firm had offices throughout Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. In 1995 architect, John Castles merged with Stephenson & Turner to form Castles, Stephenson & Turner. Since 2000, all Australian operations have closed down, however the New Zealand offices established in 1956 continue to work in healthcare architecture and on social infrastructure projects.
