David Scott AO joined the Brotherhood of St Laurence in 1953 and completed his Bachelor of Arts at University of Melbourne in 1960. In 1962 he became the founding National Director of Community Aid Abroad (subsequently OXFAM Australia). In the following years he became a founding member of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid (1968), the Executive Director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence (1970-80), President of Australian Council of Social Service (1972-75), founding member of Australia-East Timor Association (1975), and held many other positions of public office. In 1975 he was evacuated from Dili, East Timor just prior to the Indonesian invasion. He became one of Australia's leading pro-independence East Timor activists, on first name terms with many key figures both in Australia and internationally. He described this in his memoir, Last Flight Out of Dili: Memoirs of an Accidental Activist in the Triumph of East Timor (2005). In 2010 he was awarded the Insignia da Ordem de Timor-Leste in recognition of his contribution to the people of Timor-Leste over more than 30 years. |
