Biography: |
Born in England on 26 January 1912, Norman Rothfield began his political life in 1934, when he was elected a Labour councilor in the London borough of Marylebone. In 1938 he migrated to Australia and in 1941 he became a member of the Australian Labor Party. In 1942 he was appointed to the executive of the Jewish Council to Combat Fascism and Anti-Semitism, of which he became president in 1947. In the same year he assumed the role of chairman of the public relations committee of the Victorian Jewish Board of Deputies. During the next five decades of ongoing political activism, Rothfield became a foundation member of the Jewish Radical Association, the Fabian Society, Friends of Peace Now, and the Australian Jewish Democratic Society (AJDS). For twelve years, between 1974 and 1986, he became best known for his association with the political journal 'Paths to Peace', which he and his wife, Evelyn, published. Rothfield remained actively involved in the AJDS. |
