History : |
The PKIU formed in 1966 with the amalgamation of the Printing Industry Employees' Union of Aust. (PIEUA) and the Amalgamated Printing Trades Employees Union of Aust. The PIEUA was federally registered in 1917 but the Victorian Branch did not finally come into existence until 1920 following the successive amalgamation of several Victorian printing unions with a long ninteenth century lineage: Melbourne Typographical Union (1867-1916) then Victorian Typographical Society/Union (1916-1921) the Bookbinders and Paper Rulers Union, Vic. Br. (1857-1921); Cardboard Box and Carton Employees Union, Vic. Br. (1906-1921); Women Bookbinders and Stationery Employees Union, Vic. Br. (1907-1921). In 1986 the PKIU amalgamated with the Federated Photo Engravers (q.v.) and in 1992 with the Victorian Printers Operatives Union. In 1994 the PKIU amalgamated with the Automotive, Food, Metals and Engineering Union to form the Automotive, Food, Metals, Engineering, Printing and Kindred Industries Union. From 1995 it has been known as the Printing Division of the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union. |
