Power, Judith
Biography: Judith Power was born on 17 October 1946 in Surrey Hills, Melbourne, and educated at Boronia High School and Stotts Business College. At 15 she worked as a secretary in a legal office and later became a law clerk. She attended anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and supported equal pay for women. Married at 19, Power gave birth at 26 and commenced night school adult matriculation. She then worked part-time as a local newspaper journalist reporting on the Women's Electoral Lobby and subsequently became involved with: Women's Liberation Consciousness-Raising; joined Vashti's Voice Collective; attended meetings at the Little Lonsdale Street Women's Centre and Women's Liberation Halfway House collective whilst undertaking occasional rosters; and helped start Croydon's Maroondah Halfway House. A marriage break- up and Women's Liberation activism saw Power lose custody of her daughter. Power and her partner, Judy Willers, started Women and Children in Transition (WACKIT), helped re-establish the Women's Liberation Newsletter, were involved in the Lesbian Action Group and the Women's Liberation Switchboard. Recently Powers has been involved in Kapululangu Aboriginal Women's Centre, W.A. Records of Judith Power are collection No. 55 of the Victorian Women's Liberation and Lesbian Feminist Archive. Records jointly created by Judith Power and Judy Willers are collection No. 5 of the Victorian Women's Liberation and Lesbian Feminist Archive.
