Oeser, Oscar Adolph

Biography: Oeser was born in 1904 in Pretoria. By the age of 27 he had graduated from the Transvaal University College, Rhodes University Cape Town, Philipps University Marburg and the University of Cambridge, and had gained two doctorates in two disciplines, physics and psychology. In 1933 Oeser became Head of the Department in Experimental Psychology at the University of St Andrews until 1940 when he served in the war initially as Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, assigned to intelligence work by the Air Ministry. In 1945, Oeser was released from intelligence service by the Air Ministry to set up a new program of research as Controller General of the German Personnel Research Branch, focusing on the selection of personnel for the post-War reconstruction of Germany. In 1946, Oeser was appointed Foundation Chair in Psychology at the University of Melbourne where he remained until 1970 when he became Head of the Human Relations Unit at Western Mining. A member and chairman of numerous committees and a prolific researcher, Oeser was always concerned with the conditions of real life. He died in 1983.
