McPhee Gribble Pty Ltd was formed by Hilary McPhee and Diana Gribble in 1975. They specialized at first in writing and publishing children's books and in joint initiatives with other publishing houses, while at the same time building up an adult publishing list of fiction and non- fiction titles. The company incorporated in 1979 with Hilary McPhee and Diana Gribble as directors and sole shareholders. In 1976 the company moved from its first address in Jolimont to South Yarra and in 1980 to premises at 203 Drummond St, Carlton. In 1983, McPhee Gribble entered into an arrangement with Penguin Australia, in which Penguin handled the marketing and distribution of McPhee Gribble books, which were published under a joint imprint. McPhee Gribble remained independent editorially. The company moved premises again in 1983 to 66 Cecil St, Fitzroy. By 1988 they had published 250 titles and launched several significant Australian writers. In September 1989 the company broke away from the relationship with Penguin to handle its own marketing. However in November 1989, McPhee Gribble sold to Penguin Australia its publishing assets, name and goodwill. |
