Matilda Women's Refuge
History : Following public meetings and the drafting of a constitution, the North West Region Women's Refuge Committee was formed by twelve women volunteers in 1975 to obtain funds for a refuge in the NW suburbs of Melbourne. Two part-time workers were eventually employed and Matilda Women's Refuge opened in a rented house in Brunswick in March 1978. Matilda became fully funded under the Commonwealth's Supported Assistance Accommodation Program until its closure in 1989. During its life Matilda published a newsletter, 'Seasponge Monthly'. This collection is No.43 of the Victorian Women's Liberation and Lesbian Feminist Archive
