Kernot, William Charles
Biography: William Charles Kernot was born in 1845, the oldest child of Charles and Mary Kernot who migrated to Geelong from England in 1851. William was initially educated in Geelong by his Aunt Elizabeth Archer, and after the age of 12, at the Christ Church School and the Matthew Flinders School. He sat for the University of Melbourne entrance examination in February 1861, matriculated and enrolled in March at the age of 15. William Kernot's group at University was the first to be able to study Arts with a maximum component of mathematics and science leading to a Certificate of Engineering in the final year. He became the first engineering graduate of an Australian university. He became a public servant for ten years, and a part time lecturer at the University from 1868. When the degree course in engineering was started in 1883, he became the first Professor of Engineering and eventually Dean. He died in office in 1909.
