J.W. Powling & Company
History : The firm began in 1859 with Stanislaus Bayly, first town clerk of Port Fairy, who built a bluestone office, complete with strongroom, at 6 Princes St and conducted a legal practice there. He took William Powling into the firm and Powling qualified to practice in 1869. After Bayly's death in 1876 Powling bought the premises and three generations of Powlings ran the business from the same address until it was taken over by J.S. Tait & Co. of Warrnambool in 1981.
