Biography: James Harold Wesley Johns was born on 17 June 1894 at Horsham, Victoria and educated at Brighton Grammar School. He joined the Bank of New South Wales at the age of sixteen and during his employment opened branches at Walwa, Balranald, Moulamein and Salamoa in Papua New Guinea. Johns was posted to Salamoa from 1929 to 1932 by the Bank to establish a branch in the wake of large-scale development by North American interests at the Bulolo gold-fields. He then went on to manage branches at Camberwell, Preston and 267 Little Collins Street, Melbourne. Johns served on the Board of Management of the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital and on the Advisory Council of the Preston Technical School. He died at East Ivanhoe on 1 November 1948.
