Isaac, Professor Joseph Ezra

Biography: Joseph Isaac was born in Penang on March 11, 1922 and lived there until he entered the University of Melbourne in 1941. He graduated with degrees in Arts and Commerce in 1945 and later gained a PhD from the London School of Economics. He was Professor of Economics at Melbourne, 1962-1964, and at Monash, 1965-1973, when he left academia to serve as the Deputy President of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission from 1974-1987. He returned to academia as a Professorial Fellow at Melbourne's Department of Management. In 1968 he was appointed President of the Flight Crew Officers' Industrial Tribunal, which had been established in October 1967 by the Commonwealth Parliament as a single-person body to deal with industrial disputes involving pilots, navigators and flight engineers in the airline industry. He was also a member of The Royal Commission of Australian Government Administration, 1974-1976, and Chairman of the Insurance Claims Review Panel, as well as postings with the ILO in Ghana and the Australian government in Papau New Guinea and Batavia, Indonesia (in 1945). He has received many honours and distinctions, including honorary doctorates from Melbourne and Monash, honorary fellowships from the LSE and Queen's College, Melbourne, the Jubilee medal in 1978 and the Order of Australia in 1989. He has published extensively on wages policy and industrial relations.
