Creator:
Hogg, Geoffrey
Biography: Geoff Hogg was born in Tatura, rural Victoria, in 1950, the son of a primary school teacher. He studied art at the Preston Institute of Technology and the National Gallery School of Art, and teaching at Hawthorn State College. In 1974 with the encouragement of Noel Counihan he travelled to Mexico to visit the Free Access Mural Studios and the Chicago Public Art Workshops in Chicago. After working on the Nottinghill Mural Project in London, he returned to Melbourne and worked on the Lygon Street Mural, Carlton, the first of many public arts projects. He is credited with bringing the concept of community art to Australia, and has been one of its major practitioners ever since with projects such as Museum Station Mural Melbourne, Victorian Trades Hall Council Art Workshop banner project to paint banners for unions, and a series of paintings on Australian convict art and themes 'English in New Holland or Favourite Stories for Juniors' amongst many others. He has also worked in China and Turkey on community murals and on public park design projects in Australia.
