Hawthorne, Susan
Biography: Publisher and author Susan Hawthorne was born in 1951 and raised on a farm in Wagga Wagga. She was active in student politics and joined the women's liberation group at La Trobe University and the Women's Liberation Centre roster in 1973. She established and was the first Chair of the first Women's Affairs Committee. She later became a Rape Crisis Centre and Halfway House volunteer. Working as an editor at Penguin Books (1987-1991) she initiated the Penguin Women's Library Series. In 1991 she co-founded Spinifex Press and organised the International Feminist Book Fair in Melbourne in 1994, following her earlier running of the Australian Feminist Book Fortnight in 1989. Hawthorne has written, contributed to and published many works of fiction and non-fiction.. A Women's Circus and Performing Older Women's Circus member, Hawthorne completed a PhD in Women's Studies in 2002. With Renata Klein she is a co-director of Spinifex Press.
