2018.0072 [GEOFFREY BELL: THIRD PARTY PUBLICATIONS]
Date Range of Records: 1970-2001
Creator(s):
- Bell, Mr Geoffrey Alan [12 February 1944-10 June 2008]
The Geoffrey Bell Archive is made up of two series: Third Party Publications and Personal and Professional Papers. Collectively the archive documents the social and political history of the disability rights movement in Australia from the early 1970s until the 2000s.

This series, Third Party Publications, contains Bell’s extensive library of third party publications relating primarily to disability and disability rights in Australia. Collected by Geoff Bell between 1970 and 2001 and arranged chronologically, these publications track the development of disability rights in Australia during that period.

The series consists of 160 items held within eight archival units. An item may be a single publication or several grouped together, such as where there are duplicates copies or multiple issues of the same journal.

The materials contained in the series is broad and includes: guidebooks, videos, handbooks, programs, books, reports, journal articles, discussion papers, newsletters, and government publications. The series comprises both published material as well as some drafts.

The majority of the items are in fair physical condition and where additional support has been required archival folders have been used. Rusted staples have been removed from materials and replaced with plastic clips.

Item numbers have been inscribed inside the front cover of each publication, and original titles have been used as file names where applicable. ISBN’s have been recorded where evident. Many items have been inscribed “G. Bell” or “Geoff” on or inside the front cover by Bell.

Topics addressed within this series include: rehabilitation; education and training; employment, sheltered workshops and open workshops; accommodation, residential facilities and domiciliary support; compensation; access, transport and mobility; sexual rights; self-help groups; children and disability; Aboriginal Australians and disability; poverty and disability; law, policy and legislation; advocacy, activism, and self-determination. Many of the publications created in the late 1970s and early 1980s were published as contributions to the International Year of the Child 1979 and the International Year of Disabled Persons 1981.

The Geoffrey Bell Archive has been made available due to its historical and research importance. As a historical record some of the material held within the archive may contain language that reflects the era in which it was created and may not be considered appropriate today. The Collection is a useful resource for researchers interested in the history of the disability rights movement in Australia and more broadly and may prove a useful aid for future debates and discussions on disability rights issues.
