2018.0067 [PAPERS OF GERMAINE GREER, SECOND TRANCHE]
Date Range of Records: 1966-2014
Creator(s):
- Greer, Professor Germaine [29 January 1939-]
The Greer Archive has been made available due to its historical and research importance. Statements which form part of the collection are not made on behalf of the University and do not represent the University’s views. It contains material that some researchers might find confronting. This includes: Explicit language and images that reflect either the attitudes of the era in which the material was originally published or the views of the creators of the material but may not be considered appropriate today. Names, images and voices of deceased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in published and unpublished printed material, audio recordings and photographs. Graphic descriptions of medical conditions and treatment.
This series contains records sent by Greer to University of Melbourne Archives following the initial 2014 transfer. It primarily contains files documenting print journalism work undertaken in 2010 and estrays that had not been transferred in 2014. This transfer also contained books Greer considered important and used as reference material for the Female Eunuch and subsequent work. These have been catalogued separately as series 2016.0137 Annotated Reference Publications.
The bulk of the Print Journalism files collected here relate to Guardian culture columns on art criticism, film and literature on such subjects as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Samson and Delilah and Marlene Dumas. These contain printouts and clippings of the final column, email correspondence including Greer’s submitted copy, and job sheets detailing basic information about the engagement such as deadlines, rate paid and commissioners. A small number of files for other work such as a festschrift for British politician Shirley Williams are also present.
Other items in this series includes material that might have formed part of 2014.0042 General Correspondence, 2014.0045 Major Works including press material for Kissing the Rod, and 2014.0039 Research and Reference Card Indexes including index cards for Greer’s PhD. thesis, The Obstacle Race and White Beech. These items were originally packed in brown envelopes. Consult the finding aids of these series for additional context.
