The Greer Archive has been made available due to its historical and research importance. Statements which form part of the collection are not made on behalf of the University and do not represent the University’s views. It contains material that some researchers might find confronting. This includes: Explicit language and images that reflect either the attitudes of the era in which the material was originally published or the views of the creators of the material but may not be considered appropriate today. Names, images and voices of deceased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in published and unpublished printed material, audio recordings and photographs. Graphic descriptions of medical conditions and treatment.
This series consists of files transferred in 2016 by Germaine Greer from her house at Cave Creek rainforest. Much of it documents work undertaken while Greer was in Australia between 2001 and 2016, including television appearances, speaking and promotional tours, and work on the books Whitefella Jump Up, On Rage and White Beech. A substantial portion consists of correspondence with the workforce of Cave Creek Rainforest Rehabilitation Scheme and related administrative paperwork.
These papers document Cave Creek as a satellite site for Greer outside of her home in Essex. As such, it contains a sample of material relating to most of Greer’s projects undertaken in this time period, with a focus on work in Australia. A large proportion of the material here is duplicated elsewhere in the archive. These have been cross referenced where possible. Several files consist of office emails forwarded by Carol Horne in the UK for action by Greer in Australia. Other files are arranged in a similar manner to those transferred from Essex, with individual items of work such as columns or TV appearances filed by category and name of project. Incoming correspondence is arranged in alphabetical folders, mirroring the General Correspondence series transferred from Essex. Several empty files are also within the series. At the time of transfer Greer stated these were instances where she expected to find documents but did not. It can be inferred that substantial rearrangement occurred prior to transfer.
The series contains a large amount of material relating to Indigenous Australians, mostly printouts and photocopies of reference material used as research for Whitefella Jump Up, On Rage and White Beech. For White Beech Greer attempted to trace the history of Cave Creek and Natural Bridge and identify any names given to the region by the original inhabitants, contacting local community groups and conducting research at State Library of Queensland. Also documented is the promotion and media attention for Whitefella Jump and the reaction to Greer’s calls for an Aboriginal republic.
Material relating directly to the Cave Creek Rainforest Rehabilitation Scheme consists of correspondence with the workforce over pay and conditions, equipment and work to be carried out, and administrative paperwork such as time sheets, receipts and invoices for equipment and supplies. Correspondence from Will Miller, team leader for the project, contain detailed reports of the conditions and day to day work carried out at Cave Creek. Correspondence with David Jinks contains photographs and survey lists of flora found on the property. These records give a detailed picture of the day to day workings of the Cave Creek Rainforest Rehabilitation Scheme and Greer’s plans for the rainforest. |
