Biography: |
Dr John H Colebatch was born 1909 and educated at Adelaide University. He commenced his medical career at the Royal Melbourne specialising in paediatrics. he served in the Australian Army Medical Corps 1941-46 in Ceylon. he became Associate Physician at the Royal Childrens Hospital 1939-41, Physician to outpatients 1946-58 and Sub- Dean 1949-51. He held a number positions within Paediatric Society of Victoria and the Australian Paediatric Association. He was awarded a number of travelling research fellowships through the 1950s and 60s, and was Clinical Tutor in Infant Welfare at the Melbourne University Faculty He died 20 November 2005, aged 96. From 1949 Dr Colebatch specialised in paediatric areas particularly haematology and oncology. In 1948-49 he conducted a clinical trial of the efficacy of folate antagonists with patients with acute childhood leukemia. The trial confirmed the results of Dr Sidney Farber's earlier uncontrolled trials in the US. The positive results of this trial led to further trials of chemotherapeutic agents through the 1950s and 1960s. Dr Colebatch was active in the organisation of the Victorian |
