Biography: |
C.B. Christesen was born in Townsville in 1911; his family moved to Brisbane several years later, where he attended the State High School, King's College and the University of Queensland. Working as a journalist and broadcaster and active in literary and drama circles, he founded the literary journal 'Meanjin' with three friends in 1940. He soon became its sole editor and in 1944 he re-located it to the University of Melbourne upon the invitation of Vice-Chancellor John Medley, who offered to nurture it with University resources. Christesen shaped 'Meanjin' into Australia's foremost journal of literature and opinion and remained its editor until his retirement in 1974. He received many awards including the Order of Australia, Crouch Memorial Medal 1965, and published volumes of his own poetry and short stories as well as many anthologies of Australian poetry and short stories. |
