Childers, Hugh Culling Eardley

Biography:

H. C. E Childers was born 25 June 1827, London and educated at Cambridge University where he graduated B.A. in 1850 and M.A. in 1857. In 1850 he emigrated to Victoria and was subsequently appointed member of the National Board of Education, Immigration Agent and then Auditor-General of Victoria in 1853. In his official capacity as Collector of Customs, Childers conducted the bill for the establishment of the University of Melbourne. He returned to England in 1857 as the first Agent-General of the Colony. From 1860 to 1885, Childers was member for Pontefract in the House of Commons and then returned for South Edinburgh from 1886 to 1895 and remained Gladstone's avid supporter. He died 1896.
