Marfleet And Weight Ltd
History : Incorporated as a proprietary company on 14 December 1925, Marfleet and Weight were jobbing engineers. After achieving steady growth, they converted to a public company on 3 March 1954. The company specialized in heavy machinery work for the engineering trade and manufactured industrial equipment, including cranes and hydraulic valves. It was also an importer of industrial equipment. A branch office and showroom was established in Sydney. In July 1959, the company acquired A. Challingsworth Pty Ltd, an 1880’s family-business of structural engineers based in Melbourne. It subsequently continued to operate as a subsidiary company of Marfleet and Weight, specializing in structural and engineering steelwork. In January 1961, M&W acquired all the shares of Gibson Battle (Melbourne) Pty Ltd, a sales and design company with a head office in Melbourne. The company name was soon changed to Marweight Equipment Pty Ltd and undertook sales activities for the Group, including from interstate offices in Brisbane and Perth. The name, Gibson Battle, was retained for other activities. In July 1963, Marfleet purchased Abbey Engineering Pty Ltd, a manufacturer of materials handling equipment, such as cranes and stackers. Prior to the acquisition, Marfleet had been the sole distributor of “Abbey” hydraulic equipment. Marfleet and Weight Ltd had branches in NSW, WA, QLD and SA in addition to their Melbourne headquarters. The company was bought out in 1972..
