Capocchi, Eileen
Biography: Eileen Capocchi was born in Jaffa, Palestine, in 1925 and moved to Australia with her family two years later. Capocchi and her brother became state wards and placed in an orphanage after their parents separated. At fourteen she ran away to work in a Lonsdale St clothing factory and joined the Eureka Youth League. Married twice with three children, she joined the Union of Australian Women while still a member of the Communist Party and did volunteer work in the UAW office. She was UAW Secretary from 1964-1968. She founded the Women's Liberation Aspendale group in 1972 and in 1973 became a member of the Melbourne Women's Liberation Newsletter group. Disillusioned with its male- dominated politics and lack of support for the women's movement, Capocchi let her membership of the CPA lapse. In 1977 she became the coordinator of the Western Region Women's Learning Centre. This is collection No. 34 of the Victorian Women's Liberation and Lesbian Feminist Archives
