Bird, Samuel Dougan

Biography: Samuel Dougan Bird was born in November 1832, England. After graduating in medicine he became resident physician at Brampton Hospital and served as a surgeon in the Crimean War. In 1861, he came to Melbourne due to ill health, where he specialised in lung diseases, and became President of the Victorian Medical Society in 1869. From 1870 to 1887, Bird was a lecturer in the Medical Faculty, University of Melbourne and for some years was a member of the Board of Examiners. For over thirty years he was chief Medical Officer in the A.M.P. Society of Victoria. He died in 1904.
