Bird, Karen
Date of birth: 1956
Biography: Karen (aka Kassa) Bird was born in 1956. She studied a Diploma of Teaching at Monash University and a Graduate Diploma in Women's Studies at Deakin University in Victoria. From 1977 she worked as a Primary School Teacher with the Department of Education of Victoria. In 1980, Karen commenced working within women's movement organisations. She worked at the Women's Liberation Halfway House in 1980 and in 1987; in 1982 she worked as a research writer for the Victorian Women's Refuge Group; in 1983, with Sybylla Feminist Press and Publications; between 1989 and 1992, she joined the Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre as a member of the collective; volunteered as the administrator of Zelda's Young Women's Incest refuge; and was part of the Amazon Theatre. In 2001 Karen worked for the Lismore Women's and Children's Refuge; from 2005 she was employed as the Coordinator of the Women's Resource Service, in Byron Bay, New South Wales and became a contract trainer with the NSW Education Centre Against Violence, delivering a program entitled "Responding to Same-Sex Violence". In 2008 Karen was studying at Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples at Southern Cross University, New South Wales, researching on Aboriginal Lesbians' experience of relationship abuse.
