The Australian Federated Stage Employees’ Association was formed in the decade after Federation. In 1912 it replaced Stage for Theatrical to become the Australian Federated Theatrical Employees’ Association. Then in 1914 it became the Federated Theatrical & Amusement Employees’ Association. This was followed by the replacement of Federated with Australian in 1915. As the title suggests the Australian Theatrical & Amusement Employees’ Association (ATAEA) was initially established to cover workers involved in stage and live theatre. However, with the emergence of cinematography and television the union’s membership extended to encompass workers in these newer industries. In later years the union was also responsible for ground staff at outdoor events. Then in 1992/3 it amalgamated with the Australian Journalists Association (AJA) and Actors’ Equity of Australia to form Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA).
