The Australian Journalists' Association (AJA) was formed in 1910 and registered federally in 1911. The Melbourne District of the AJA (later Victoria District and then Victorian Branch) was also formed in 1911. Earlier Victorian based journalist organisations include the Victorian Reporters' Association, which emerged c.1889, the Australasian Institute of Journalists formed in 1892, and the Press Bond/Club that formed in 1906. Other bodies include the Press Club of Victoria formed 1945-46, and the Melbourne Press Club formed in 1971. Federally, the union maintained a continued service to its members until 1991 when it merged with the Australian Commercial & Industrial Artists’ Association. Then between 1992 and 1993 it amalgamated with the Australian Theatrical & Amusement Employees’ Association (ATAEA) and Actors’ Equity of Australia to form Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA).
