Amalgamated Engineering Union Melbourne No 3 Branch
History : The AEU was registered in 1921, its predecessor being the Amalgamated Society of Engineers. Originally established in 1851 in Australia by emigrant British engineers as a branch of the Britain Union, it remained the AEU Australian Section until 1969 when it became autonomous. In mid-June 1972 it amalgamated with the Sheet Metal Workers (q.v.), Blacksmiths and Boilermakers (q.v.) and Federated Jewellers to form the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union (q.v.) which is its direct heir. The AEU has been a pre-eminent force in labour politics especially during the power struggles after 1945.
Activities/Occupation: Trade Unions
