Stanley Simpson Addison started his working life as a farm labourer, blacksmith and doctor’s coachman, working his way through university as a laboratory assistant at the University of Adelaide (B.Sc. 1902). Following graduation he became the first General Secretary of the Australasian Christian Student Movement (1905-1913). Addison served as a Red Cross searcher with the AIF (1914-16) at Gallipoli and in France then joined the Submarine Detection Division of the Royal Navy at Dover with the rank of Lieutenant until hostilities ceased. He remained in England for two years to assist the repatriation of Australian soldiers. He was appointed Assistant Registrar at the University of Melbourne (1920-1930), helping to establish Melbourne University Press then returned to the Australian Red Cross Society as General Secretary (1937-1947). Following retirement he moved to Kangaroo Ground and became a member of the Council of the Shire of Eltham (1947-1953). He gave evidence to the Royal Commission on Monetary and Banking Systems (1936). He married Vera Staley in 1917 and they had no children. His papers were inherited by Bill Glasson (nephew) in 1972.
