1986.0115 [RECORDS OF THE WALLABY CLUB]
Date Range of Records: 1894-1980
Creator(s):
- The Wallaby Club [1894-]
The Wallaby Club Collection documents all aspects of the life of the Club. It includes records such as Walk Cards from the Club’s many day walks, as well as a complete set of Dinner Cards from the Annual Dinner/Annual General Meeting. There are also records of the three other main social events in the Club’s annual calendar, namely the Christmas Dinner, Ladies’ Dinner and ‘Uncup Weekend’. The administration of the Club features extensively in the records in the Collection, including a complete set of Annual Reports. So too is the Club’s history well documented, including the ANZAC Stick, the Club’s only possession, which is passed on from the outgoing president of the Club to his successor each year. The Collection contains biographical material about many of the Club members, who have included men widely recognised in their fields of endeavours, such as virologist Frank Macfarlane Burnet and Australian general Sir John Monash. The companionship and bonhomie valued highly among Club members - sentiments expressed in the Club’s motto, ‘à votre santé’ - are apparent in the extensive photographic material in the Collection, much of it depicting Club walks.
The records documented have been assembled by a variety of club secretaries, historians and archivists at different times. This is reflected in the organic quality apparent in how the Club's records have been created and arranged.
For the purposes of archival processing, those titles inscribed on enclosures in which records were originally housed, such as manila folders, have commonly been used as file titles in The Wallaby Club Guide to Records.
