2006.0022 [CORRESPONDENCE WITH MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITION SHADOW MINISTRY]
Date Range of Records: 1975-1975
Creator(s):
- Fraser, John Malcolm [1930-2015]
Correspondence between J M (Malcolm) Fraser as Leader of the Opposition (March-November 1975) and members of his Shadow Ministry. A particularly important component of the series are the files relating to Shadow Cabinet meetings under both Mr Fraser and, to some extent, his predecessor B M Snedden. These also include the less frequent Shadow Ministry and Joint Party meetings and clearly (but not necessarily fully) document the Opposition's focus and approach in the months leading up to the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor Government. The files for individual Shadow Ministers include mainly correspondence and other papers specific to the respective portfolio. The Shadow Cabinet files include agendas, records of meetings, briefing notes for Mr Fraser, policy documents and some newspaper articles. Both types of file record the development of Liberal Coalition policy on various subjects, including defence, foreign affairs, federalism, rural matters, social welfare, appointment of permanent heads to Commonwealth departments, pecuniary interests of members of Parliament, urban and regional development, environment and conservation, tourism and the Senate's power to reject Appropriation and Supply Bills. Some items are currently held at the National Archives of Australia (see list for details). Formerly National Archives of Australia series M1360.
