Papers relate to Edward Woodward's work as Senior Counsel for the Yirrkala Aboriginal People in the Gove Land Rights Case (Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd in 1970-71). At the invitation of the Prime Minister, Mr. E G Whitlam, Justice Woodward conducted a Royal Commission into Aboriginal land rights in the Northern Territory. His first report was presented in July 1973 and recommended the establishment of Aboriginal Land Councils aimed at providing a united Aboriginal voice for advice and advocacy in the Territory. A final report was presented in April 1974. The commission paved the way for the Northern Territory Land Rights Legislation which was enacted in 1976. He later acted as Chairman of the Aboriginal Justice Committee. The papers reflect these activities.
