2006.0038 [Records of the Victorian Trades Hall Council Arts Office]
Date Range of Records: 1975-2004
Creator(s):
- Victorian Trades Hall Council [-]
This collection of posters was begun by George Seelaf, first Arts Officer of the Trades Hall, in the 1970s and continued by the Trades Hall Library until c.2004. Approximately 5-10% of the collection comprises posters produced by the VTHC for union campaigns and by the VTHC Arts Workshop providing a visual record of VTHC campaigning and lobbying, union coordination and Art and Working Life activities. The bulk of the collection consists of posters produced by other organisations, initially collected as part of the Arts Officer's interest in political art, and continued by the Library as an archive of VTHC posters, and as a resource for research and display. Topics represented in these posters include 'celebrations' such as Labour Day and May Day (annual posters by Rick Amor); Trade Union recruitment and promotion; Women in the workforce; Occupational Health and Safety; Trade Union Training (TUTA) and so on. There are also posters about bitter disputes, such as scab labour at Newport (1975) and the sacking of waterside workers (Maritime Dispute 1998). The subject matter contributes to a visual record of Victorian union campaigns for over 30 years.
